National Committee To Free The Cuban Five Bulletin

Letter from Nadine Gordimer in The New York Times
Nadine Gordimer Another breakthrough in the corporate media-The New York Times published a Letter to the Editor from Nobel Prize-winning author Nadine Gordimer, in support of the Cuban Five, under the headline "A Nobel Laureate's Plea: Justice for the Cuban Five."

The letter begins: "In the responsibility for human justice, which, I believe, must be upheld and expressed by all citizens of our world, I condemn the continued prosecution and incarceration of the Cuban Five by the United States of America. This travesty of justice, perpetrated by what claims to be the world's example of democratic standards, has now been pursued for almost a decade."

A visit with Ramon Labañino
Rosa, Ramon, GLR I felt honored to be able to visit Ramón once again in Beaumont federal prison in Texas Sept. 22 and 23. Despite the very difficult prison conditions, Ramón remains strong physically and in high spirits, as do all the Five Heroes. He is very enthusiastic about the growing support around the world for their struggle. He was especially excited about Gerardo Hernández's interview with BBC and Reuters, and feels that it was a big breakthrough for their cause. Ramón is longing to see his beloved family, his wife Elizabeth and daughters Ailí, Laura, and Lisbeth, who are still delayed in receiving U.S. visas for months.

Ramón receives many letters every day, which makes it impossible to respond to everyone. But the correspondence is important to him. He said each letter he reads gives him hope and sustenance. Ramón just sent a letter to our office, in greeting to all the Five's supporters, and asked that we convey it widely. (picture is earlier visit of Free the Five activists Rosa Peñate and Gloria La Riva with Ramón).

In solidarity,

Gloria La Riva for the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five
